Powis castle, originally built circa 1200, began life as a medieval fortress. Remodelled and embellished over more than 400 years, it contains a magnificent collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and tapestries, as well as a world-famous garden.

If you enjoy walking, you will love the nearby Glyndŵr's Way, a trail granted National Trail status in millennium year 2000. Its enigmatic name derives from the early fifteenth century folk hero Owain Glyndŵr, who won significant battles close to the route and who held a Welsh Parliament in Machynlleth.

Along the Trail are some of the finest landscape features in Wales including the tranquil Radnorshire Hills, the shores of the Clywedog Reservoir and heather clad Plynlimon.  There are spectacular views over Cadair Idris, Lake Vyrnwy, the Cambrian Mountains and Y Golfa.

Lake Vyrnwy is an RSPB nature reserve. It offers stunning scenery, great walking and cycling. There is a visitor centre with a shop, disabled facilities and  information on the abundant wildlife of the area. It was the location for BBC Springwatch 2009. And best of all – its free.

As one of the most varied and beautiful National Trails, Offa's Dyke offers the opportunity to walk along the moorland and river valley, and through ancient woodland between Sedbury and Prestatyn. Rich in history the Eighth century earthwork, created by King Offa of Mercia, passes through both historic towns and little-known landscapes, affording walkers views of other buildings of interest (including Rhuddlan Castle, Moel Arthur Hill Fort and a number of Railways).

At the halfway point in Knighton is the Offa's Dyke Centre with its Interactive Exhibition for the Dyke and a range of services for walkers.

Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway, with unique Hungarian and Austrian coaches, now provides a tourist service for all the family to enjoy.
